Which Would You Rather?

Monday, June 19th, 2006

I went to an audition a couple of weeks ago, and I didn’t get the part. (If I had a dollar for every time I got “Thank you, Kristal, we really enjoyed your audition, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to cast you,”…) I had naturally hoped otherwise, since I’d been called in for readings 3 times. No such luck. This past week I was at another audition, and ran into a few people from the previous one. They had gotten Thanks But No emails too, but were surprised I had, since “You went in like, 3 times!”

Which brings me to this question. Would you rather not get the role/job, but have people say you should have (because you’d have done a fabulous job), or get the job, and have people say you shoudn’t have (because really, there were probably more qualified people out there?)?

Ideally, getting the part and having people gush about how you deserve it, but that’s not an option.

This isn’t a cattiness issue either, of someone with a jealous streak trying to ruin your life. Just: Get the part, but have people not believe you can do it, but you still have it, OR have people say you should have got the part, but the fact of the matter is you didn’t?

How’s that for food for thought!?

Tackling Tap

Thursday, June 15th, 2006

Any sane person would probably just take tap lessons. With a real instructor. However, being that I am not working, and am therefore wanting to learn tap to be more marketable, I opted for something different. Now, I did think about lessons. But looking in the Leisure Guide for Surrey, they had Tap Level 3. That’s it. No Tap Level 1 or 2. Jumping full force into intermediate tap probably wouldn’t have been a good idea, I think to myself. And so I look up alternatives.

“Let’s Learn How To Dance (TM),” Instructed by Kathy Blake. This VHS tape was probably made in the 80’s, and, after reading the back, it promises that after learning how to tap, I will “gain control over your [my] social life, enjoy parties more, and be more popular.”

I’m sold on it!

Honestly though, it’s a good tape to learn from. Everything’s broken down into steps (as it should be!), and I now have the Stomp Time Step down fairly well! Definite accomplishment. My only tape critique would be the “Well done!”s and  ”That was much better.”s that were sprinkled throughout. Kathy, you can’t see what I’m doing!

I was always pretty good at following (basic) choreography, but tap is definitely going to help this actor become a Triple Threat! And if it’ll help my social life along the way, there’s no was I can lose.

Here We Go!

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

Hello, hopefully soon-to-be avid readers!

This has been a rare time off between shows, also being used as a time to stop saying I’ll do things, and actually do them. Such as this blog. I usually journal things, and I still will, but I’m a faster typer than I am a writer, so hopefully this helps keep my trains of thoughts on the rails, instead of them running off! I’m still trying to figure out how this thing works, too, so we’ll see if we stick with this design or not.

You know, some people love time off. I used to. I mean, I still like the occasional day off every once in a while, but I’ve had the last few weeks off, and I’m about ready to go crazy. I tell people this, and they look at me like they hate me. I’m being honest though! I’d much rather be ridiculously crazy, working on multiple shows, than sitting at home all day looking up audition notices (which I would do regardless) and playing hours of minesweeper.

So, if any casting directors happen to be reading this, please look at my website (www.kristalgrace.com) and let me know if you have a part I can audition for! If I get cast, I’ll love you forever.

…I also have no idea how to post proper pictures on here. If anyone’s blog stems from WordPress, and you know this magical piece of information, please let me know!

More to come soon…
